The Payment Moments Marina Software Wasn't Built For
Card-Present Payments for Marina Contracts | Dockwa

Marina management software has gotten remarkably good at two things: reservations and point-of-sale. Book a slip, ring up fuel, process a pump-out — the workflow is clean, the payment is card-present, the receipt prints, and everything lands in the right place.

But dock life doesn't stop there.

A boater walks up mid-season to pay a seasonal contract installment. Another wants to settle their transient reservation balance before they leave the slip. A third is closing out a pay-later invoice that's been sitting open for two weeks. In every one of these moments, the software running the marina wasn't really designed for what happens next — and most operators have filled that gap with improvised workarounds that carry costs they can't easily see.

What the Right Answer Looks Like

Card-present payment, attached to the original invoice. Full stop.

The boater presents their card at the dock. The payment attaches directly to the contract installment, pay-later invoice, or reservation balance it was meant to cover. The invoice closes. The audit trail is intact. The card is not automatically saved to the boater's profile, and there's no deletion of records to make the payment work.

This is not a complicated concept. It's simply something marina software has historically made difficult to execute — because the tools were built around reservations and POS, not around the full range of in-person payment moments that happen at the dock every day.

What Changed in Dockwa

Dockwa recently added Card Reader as a payment option directly within the Settle modal — for contract invoices, pay-later invoices, and transient reservation balances.

The workflow is straightforward: a staff member selects Card Reader at the point of settlement, and the boater taps their card on the connected S700 or M2 Stripe Terminal reader. The charge attaches to the original invoice. No deletion, no re-creation, no manual card entry. No tip prompt. Card not saved. Audit trail intact. For marinas already using connected Stripe Terminal readers, there's no setup required.

A Practical Nudge

If your team regularly keys card numbers at the desk, or deletes invoices to route payments through POS, this is worth a direct conversation. The workarounds feel low-stakes in the moment — but the processing cost and compliance exposure accumulate quietly, over hundreds of transactions, across an entire season.

The right payment infrastructure for a marina isn't just reservations and POS. It's every moment at the dock where money changes hands. Most of those moments now have a cleaner answer.
