Three questions your ship store can’t answer

If your marina runs a ship store, fuel dock, or chandlery, there are three questions your ownership group or accountant will eventually ask you.

  • What is my inventory worth right now?
  • What did the goods I sold actually cost me?
  • And what are my margins by item?

The existing Inventory Report surfaces item activity within a date range. With this release, we’re adding cost basis, margin, and inventory valuation to that picture, so the answers to those questions are in the same system your team already uses for POS.

For your dock, Rent Roll. For your store, this.

Rent Roll gives your ownership group a point-in-time picture of every slip: what’s occupied, what’s vacant, what’s been billed, and what’s been collected. You pick a date and run it. The data is already there.

The Cost of Goods Sold report does the same thing for your store. Pick a period and see what your items cost versus what you sold them for. The data is already in Dockwa. This report surfaces it in a form an accountant can use.

Cost of Goods Sold report, available Oct 1

The Cost of Goods Sold report goes live October 1 in your Dockwa dashboard under Reports. If you’ve used the Inventory History report before, you’ll recognize it: this is the same report, renamed to reflect what it actually shows, with two additions.

First, a Category column pulls in the product category from your POS setup, so you can see COGS broken out by category rather than sorting through a flat item list. Second, a Current Retail Price column shows each item’s price at the time you run the report, distinct from the period average retail. And a long-standing issue is fixed: every item with any cost history now shows a cost value in the export, whether or not it had activity in the date range. Previously, an item untouched for the period exported with blank price columns, making the report unusable for price audits or valuation.

The underlying math is weighted-average cost: total cost of units received divided by total units received. It’s what the report has always computed. The rename just makes it honest.

For operators who have been getting this report via manual pulls from the product team, this is now self-serve.

We’re continuing to expand the reporting suite to make it more self-serve and more aligned to how marinas actually run their businesses. More inventory and cost reporting is on the way.
