Tides of Trivia: Cruising Towards Community Impact
Our Trivia Night, hosted and sponsoered by Team Dockwa, was nothing short of a nautical blast! Huge thanks to everyone who joined us in support of our friends at SailMaine. It was truly a night to remember, filled with fierce competition, plenty of laughs, and even a bit of learning! As we reminisce about the good times shared, we're excited to share the event for you in this quick recap. We hope it brings a smile to your face and inspires you to join us at our next gathering!
To kick off the night, we enjoyed a casual social hour, which buzzed with excitement of fellow maritime enthusiasts joining us via water and land. Glasses clinked and stories flowed as everyone had a chance to mingle, form their teams, and celebrate SailMaine’s mission to make sailing more accessible. As the appetizers dissipated, SailMaine’s Erin Quigley and I (Lauren from Dockwa) took the stage to host the main event- TRIVIA!
We began with a heartfelt thank you to all the participants for their support of community sailing and a reminder of how everyone could tap into community resources at Dockwa, and ways to stay involved with SailMaine. Elliot from Dockwa, equipped with the top-secret answer key, was ready at his station to grade the answers from each round—a task he performed with precision and a grin (especially while grading the more humorous submissions). Huge shoutout to Elliot for keeping track of scores throughout the event!
Eight teams formed, and trivia began! Our first round category, "Coast of Maine", was quite on brand for this particular group. It was fun to see which teams knew their local trivia, like the fact that The Dolphin Marina in Harpswell Maine serves up fresh blueberry muffins and coffee every morning to their marina guests. And kudos to those who could name all five ferries in the Casco Bay Line Fleet—that one was a real tester!
"Nautical Pop Culture," my personal favorite category, brought creativity to the question pool, especially during the "name that tune" segment featuring "Portland Town" by Schooner Fare (give it a listen... is that not the best 'name that tune' ever?!). We also celebrated industry trailblazers like Tracy Edwards, the skipper of SV Maiden, who lead the first all-female crew in a round-the-world sailing race. Of course there were also some Captain Ron references in this round.
The Navigation category had us cracking up at the host stand. Watching seasoned boaters scratch their heads trying to remember the dead reckoning formula was a humbling and hilarious highlight! It just goes to show that even the saltiest sea dogs can have a moment of landlubber confusion. And it was a good reminder to everyone to sharpen up on their more old-school navigation techniques!
The "Boat Parts" round sparked lively debates about the Scandinavian origin of the word "skeg," while the sailing category’s frantic one-minute dash to label 28 parts of a sailboat added an extra competitive twist. The final round of trivia set the true SailMaine and Dockwa aficionados apart as we quizzed teams on details about our organizations. Although only a few teams correctly identified Dockwa’s monthly newsletter as The Running Fix, the range of extremely creative answers provided plenty of laughter and some great ideas for future boater outreach initiatives. 😂
We wrapped up the night with a highly anticipated raffle drawing that had everyone on the edge of their seats. Cheers erupted for the winners who won nights at their favorite Dockwa marinas in Maine. It was a great way to close the evening. Huge shoutout to Maine Yacht Center, Spring Point Marina, The Dolphin, Sebasco Harbor Resort, Boothbay Harbor Marina, Carousel Marina, Coveside Marina, Henry R Able & Co, and Winter Harbor Yacht Club for their generous donations - nights at their marinas aboard free of charge - into our raffle!
Thanks to everyone who came out, we raised over $2,700 for SailMaine's community sailing programs! At Dockwa we are all about supporting SailMaine’s mission to make boating more accessible, and we're thrilled to have sponsored this event.
Here's to embracing community, supporting a great cause, and the great memories!
See ya on the water,
Lauren from Dockwa
