Dockwa's 2017 Hurricane Season Marina & Waterway Damage Report

Published on 9/6/17 11:51 AM

Thousands of boaters turned to the Dockwa Hurricane Waterway & Damage Report last season after Hurricane Matthew took its toll on the east coast. We’ve updated  this crucial boater tool back for the 2017-18 hurricane season. Click here to file your report of marina or waterway damage, and view intel provided by your fellow boaters as well as marina management & staff.

The 2016 hurricane season saw its worst with Hurricane Matthew’s October devastation. This year we're barely into September and Texas is already reeling from the chaos and tragedy Hurricane Harvey wreaked. Hurricane Irma is currently predicted to do that and worse on the Caribbean, Florida, Bahamas, and the lower East Coast this weekend.

To boaters and marina managers, please help by sharing any information you can with fellow boaters by submitting the form on this page or emailing becky@dockwa.com. You can also post photos on the Dockwa Facebook Group

The Dockwa Hurricane Marina Damage Report: "Crowd-Sourcing's Finest Hour"

A tech startup team made of boaters, our natural response to Hurricane Matthew was to capitalize on our strengths: quickly leveraging technology to solve a problem – specifically bridging communication between marinas and boaters.

Numerous conflicting, unverified reports posted in numerous forums, Facebook groups, and websites across the web added to the storm's chaos; the damage report condensed and constantly updated with verified information became the source of truth.

This year we've renewed our committment to monitor and confirm reports and update the Hurricane Waterway and Marina Damage Report every waking minute as information flows in.

Continually Improving Boater Tools

During Harvey our engineers also made some tweeks to marina pages on Dockwa and Marinas.com to reflect marina statuses; more info on those updates in the coming weeks. Meanwhile they've also updated the Marinas.com chart with a NOAA weather overlay, to give boaters and marinas an idea of which locations may be in harm's way.

Leveraging Tech to Bridge Marine Communication

We work closely with our partner marinas year-round to help them disseminate information to boaters. During times of crisis such as these, we reach out to our Dockwa partner marinas to offer support.

BoatUSTrade Only TodayCruising Compass, and other boater media outlets shared the report with their boaters in 2016, and we're extremely grateful to them for helping get the word out. You can help get the word out to boaters as well – simply share this link out on your go-to boating forums, Facebook, Twitter, etc.

To our boater and marina family affected or about to be by incoming storms, our thoughts are with you. Please don't hesitate to reach out if we can be of service. Stay safe out there.
